Between taking care of a little baby and then going back to work, I just didn’t have the time or the inclination or even the energy to worry about exercising.  I would do it later I thought.  And then it happened – I got pregnant again and as exciting as that was – and the result wonderful, I ended up at the end of the day, not just 20 pounds overweight, but much more like 40 pounds over my ideal weight. Now I am a small girl – only 5′ 3″ and I should really be about 120 pounds at the most.  But here I was, a whopping 150 pounds.  It seemed to be centered in my tummy and my chest.  I EVEN  had to buy bigger pants and bigger bras.  My shirts wouldn’t button all the way.  I just wanted to cry, I was so embarrassed.

I AM OFFICIALLY FAT

Yup, I was officially in fat clothes!  And I hated it.  Of course my first priority was taking care of my two beautiful children.  And trust me, they kept me active.  So busy, even though it felt like I didn’t have time to exercise, I barely had time to eat.  A little bit of the weight went away, but still, there was about 20-25 pounds of belly and boob fat that just wouldn’t go away.  Dress shopping was a nightmare and I hated to have pictures taken of me.  I would delete any of me from the digital camera before they could truly be recorded.
And of course then it happened.  I was at work one day and the nice young intern asked when I was due!!!! What??  He must have realized his mistake, cause he fumbled around and tried to hide his embarrassment. Hmm, I thought shrugging it off, it must be the cut of the shirt.   And then, when I was picking my up my son, one of his little friends touched my belly and asked, “Do you have a baby in there?”  Wow, I thought to myself, I am really FAT.

Now don’t get me wrong. I normally hate putting labels like that on a person.  And I do have healthy self-esteem, really.  I mean I was belly fat with tape measuer Thanks for Signing up  Lose Baby Weighta great mom, a career mom and a loving wife.  So what if I didn’t have the perfect body.  My kids loved me and so did my husband.  What more could I ask?

And then I did decide to ask.  I mean carrying around (more than) a few extra pounds after having a baby was normal, right? Of course it had been more than a few months since the birth of my daughter. But  I wanted to be my old, pre-baby skinny self. I wanted to be full of energy and able to work and play all day.  But the extra fat was weighing me down.  And what kind of example was I setting for the kids?

So I tried diets.  All of them – from South Beach, to The Zone, To Atkins. I read all about every celebrity mommy who had miraculously shed all of their baby weight. And they worked somewhat.  I even squeezed in time for exercise and I saw results.  But nothing stuck.   They required too much work, too much time and money.  Soon, I would be right back where I was, all the pounds right back on.

Desperate, I searched the internet and found a few diet ideas.  I tired one, bought it – it was quite reasonable for everything you got.  And you know what?  FINALLY SOMETHING THAT WASN’T A DIET! Sure there were menus and suggested recipes but it was more about changing how you thought about food, about your mindset.
